This series consists of chronological correspondence. The series includes letters received and copies of letters sent by the Superintendent at Vermilion Lake Indian School. The majority of the correspondence is between the Superintendent and the additional farmer stationed at Nett Lake Indian Reservation. Other correspondents include the Commissioner of Indian Affairs and his representatives; the General Land Office at Cass Lake; and the Superintendent at La Pointe Agency. The records provide information about the administration of Vermilion Lake Indian School and supervision of the land under its jurisdiction. Subjects include employees; employee positions and wages; Indian boarding and day schools; teachers and students; school buildings and building improvements; equipment and supplies; purchases; and property. Other topics include the establishment of separate facilities at Nett Lake Indian Reservation for the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa Indians who did not live at Vermilion Lake; Indian allotments; use of land held by the Boise Forte and Deer Creek Chippewa (also called Ojibwa) Indians; crops produced on the reservation; horses; timber cutting and sales; trespass and hunting on reservation land.
